Adapted Physical Education and Related Services 

Adapted physical education is a direct special education service in the curricular area of physical education; it is not a related service. While APE may work on similar student skills as other related services, we have very different expertise and perspectives. An overview of adapted physical education and how our disciplines overlap will be provided. As school-based practitioners, related services such as OT, PT and Speech practitioners need to understand the role of APE and how, together, they can promote health and wellness in the lives of students with disabilities. We will discuss how we can effectively collaborate with APE specialists and PE teachers to improve student outcomes and participation.
